Magical Portraits That Transform The Elderly Into Fairytale Characters

What if humans had a way to speak directly to nature? Trees, mountains, rocks– what if they were trying to have a conversation with us, just like in a fairytale?

In this world of mythological ideas, photographers Riitta Ikonenand and Karoline Hjorth are using Norway's senior citizens to show us what this fairy world might look like.

The project is called “Eyes as Big as Plates” and it operates on the idea that, if we could speak with nature, it would be the elderly who would connect most intimately with it.

Ikonenand is from Finland, but it was her friendship with Norwegian artist Hjorth that sparked the idea. According to Ikonenand, her Norwegian friend would chat with nature like it was a close friend.

“I would go and visit her in Norway, and she would talk to the rocks and the mountains,” Ikonen says. “I thought, hold on a minute, I’m from Finland, so I obviously appreciate my lakes and bogs and mountains. But I don’t really talk to my mushrooms and blueberries. So what’s happening here?”

This train of thought lead her to create a collaborative series between the two artists, bringing in elements of mythology, folklore, and portraiture. “Eyes as Big as Plates” consists of about 60 portraits and you can find a book of them here.
