Gritty Photos From Small-Town Russia Taken Only With A Phone

When Dmitry Markov's camera was stolen in the orphanage he was working in, his whole workflow changed. Without a proper camera, he switched to using his iPhone and never looked back.

Markov was once a journalist, but he made the change to photography after coming to the conclusion that photos can speak on topics where words fall short. He now uses his photography work to document life in Pskov, a small town in Russia near the border of Estonia.

Life there is bleak, especially in the orphanage where he used to work. But even if the work can be dark, Markov finds it important to cover these topics.

“I chose for myself a theme in life and work, a topic that interests me and that worries me as a person,” he says of the gritty subjects in his work.

“Photography allows you to grasp states and feelings that are difficult to describe with text.".
