Photos Taken Inside The Hellish World Of Teenage Russian Re-education Camps

French-born Lisa Sarafati spent about ten years living in Russia during the 1990s. And armed with her camera, she began to capture the everyday life of the teenagers and rebels there.

"My goal is to capture a moment in people's everyday life," she says.

Her work takes us into the world teens, and more specifically, into the re-education camps where transgender kids and runaways were being held. The work is at once disturbing and beautiful, and Sarafati refers to that 10 year period of her life as one of the worst.

I loved the experience, but it was like a descent into hell.

"I was a little crazy at the time, and I wanted to find the most extreme situations I could," she says. "I loved the experience, but it was like a descent into hell."

This collection is called Acta Ets, a reference to the Latin term "Acta Est Fabula" meaning the "the play is over". The title hints at her intentions for the work. This isn't a documentary, this is a piece of twisted theatre.
