Romantic Black And White Photos Of Hong Kong In The 1950s

Fan Ho was 21-years-old when he found himself in Hong Kong, living the life of a writer and film student.

The city was undergoing a dizzying metamorphosis, and bored by his studies, he picked up a camera and began exploring the city's streets.

He began entering his work in competitions. And after receiving the grand prize from a local photography competition, Ho was hooked. He couldn't put the camera down.

Ho's work captures daily life in the 1950 and 60s, a time when Hong Kong was still known to the West as the Pearl of the Orient. His shots are timeless and romantic, blending tradition with a modern spirit newly pervading the city. Each shot is carefully planned and executed, leaving the viewer with a sense of cinematic awe.

Ho's work has been published as several volumes of photography books. Those are available here.
