China's Most Depressing, Deserted Fun Parks Captured In All Their Smoggy Glory

Stefano Cerio has a thing for theme parks, cruise ships, and holiday resorts. Only, he doesn't visit them for the same reasons most people do.

Cerio isn't looking for a good time. Instead, he's on the prowl for shots of the world's most dismal holiday attractions. And in this series, he tackles the gray world of deserted Chinese theme parks.

"When there’s a blue sky, I can’t take a picture,” the Italian photographer says. “Otherwise it might look like a holiday brochure.”

Lucky for Cerio, he doesn't have to actually wait for a cloudy day. Most days end up being gray due to the smog.

“If there is a political element, this is where it seeps in,” Cerio says. “My images of Macau, one of the only places in China where gambling is legal, show just how different it is from Las Vegas. Instead of bright lights, it is foggy, with empty lagoons.”

I like to take photos of the people that are not there; I call them “portraits of the absence”

For Cerio, capturing the emptiness of the parks is crucial to capturing the portrait of the places he visits:

"I like to take photos of the people that are not there; I call them “portraits of the absence”. I think there is a sort of reflection when all is empty, particularly in places where, a few hours before, there were millions of people."

In addition to his China Fun collection, Cerio has captured moody scenes of ski slopes at night, empty playgrounds after dark, cruise ships, and water parks in winter.

What can we say? He seems to have a thing for depressing destinations. We just wish Banksy's Dismaland was still around. We know that'd be right up Cerio's alley.
