Loreal Prystaj has a series where she photographs herself in bathtubs, all styled differently with an eclectic collection of objects organized around her.

It's a wild series with slightly risqué overtones– these nude self-portraits, after all.

But here's the surprising thing: the series didn't start as a body-centric project. Oddly enough, Body in Bathworks actually began when Prystaj dreamed up a way to express her inner child.

For this fine artist, capturing her inner child meant taking a self-portrait in a bathtub full of colorful balls.

In 2011, while living in New York City, I was exploring different ways of capturing my ‘inner child.’

“In 2011, while living in New York City, I was exploring different ways of capturing my ‘inner child.’ My first attempt to do so was a scene created in a bathroom," she recalls.

"I filled the tiny room to the brim with fun balls, set my camera and timer up, submerged myself into the tub, and photographed myself closing my eyes and blissfully smiling.”

That shot was just the first and more began to follow, each one becoming more and more surreal. The series transformed into a dairy, documenting changes in time, space, and her own body. Bathtubs became her creative outlet and the woman in the bath became a fictional character who could morph into anything.

"Later down the line, the question became, how should I interact with my environment?" Prystaj says. "During this phase, my characters came to life, interacting with his or her environment that existed only in the bathtub.

Presently I ask myself, what character should I be? With this question, I actually interact with the viewer by making eye contact with the camera.”
