Circus Work: This Is What It Looks Like To Travel With A Circus

Peter Lavery began his photography career at Leeds Art College and then the Royal College of Art in London. But before he could finish, a romantic whimsy saw him living rough and traveling with circus performers.

Circus Work is the photo documentation of his travels.

Lavery was first inspired to photograph circus performers when a troupe came to his hometown of Wakefield in 1968.

"I was immediately struck by the disparity between the outward exoticism, the finery, the sequined costumes, the plumes, the elaborate display and backstage ordinariness," he says. "At once I was enthralled by the sounds and the smell, but I had no idea the subject would capture and hold my imagination for the best part of five decades."
