12 Iconic Rappers Get Their Portrait Made As Neon Signs

Hong Kong-based artist Natalie Wong is taking continuous line portraitrature to the next level.

She's not just sketching her favorite rappers on paper– she's lighting them up as neon signs!

These 12 portraits feature names like Drake, Pharrell, Snoop Dogg, Lauryn Hill, Tupac Shakur, Jay Z, and Eminem. They were created using Wong's original drawings which she then traced with electroluminescent wire on a colorful sheet of plastic.

“The work is inspired by contour drawings from artists such as Schiele and Picasso," Wong says of her process. "Matching a traditional form of drawing with the subject matter of rappers, creates a statement where the freestyle line of each portrait reflects a fundamental technique of rapping.”

“Realizing the work in a ‘neon-like’ form evokes an urban street scene and references the artist’s own environment, another signifier of freestyle rap.”
