Utterly Ordinary Objects Shot To Look Like Surrealist Masterpieces

Elspeth Diederix abstracts everyday objects by removing them from their expected surroundings. She carefully removes contextual hints, making the mundane appear unfamiliar and surreal.

This is Still / Life, Diederix's series of curated object compositions. Though they may look simple, the Amsterdam-based photographer spends long hours affecting the perfect layouts.

"Most images take days of preparation and some objects I have with me for months until I find the right location in which to shoot them," she says of her process. "By working with the material itself, I can make the objects more animated and the image easier for the viewer to see and believe."

As for inspiration, Diederix likes to hit the road when she needs new ideas.

"Traveling and being immersed in different landscapes has also played an important part in developing my work," she says. "Being in places unknown to me forces those abstract moments to appear more frequently and allows me to concentrate on finding the right location for the right object."
