Planning World Domination? This Secret Soviet Atlas Has Everything You Need

These secret Soviet maps represent the earliest version of Google Maps. Only, instead of producing directions and reviews, the maps held all information needed to launch a full military operation against the US and Europe.

Starting in the 1950s, the Soviet military began compiling information to map the world. This secret project went on for 40 years, resulting in an incredibly detailed atlas of the world.

This was the greatest mapping project of their time, undertaken during the Cold War era when publicly available maps were often distorted in case they fell into enemy hands.

Of course, these Soviet maps are notable for their global scale. But what makes them stand out from other atlas projects is the incredible detail provided for US and European cities. The maps reveal freshwater sources, transit lines, road widths, bridge loads, and even military buildings that the Soviets weren't supposed to know about.

How did the Soviet government gather all this classified information? The whole operation was a secret. But considering that the Sputnik satellite launched in 1957, it's possible to imagine they used early satellite technology.
