You'll Feel Uneasy After Seeing These Rooms Flooded With Water

These surreal images of flooded opulence are the result of New York-based photographer James Casebere.

For the last 40 years, he's been building and photographing table-top architecture models. While that statement alone is fascinating, it's his flooded rooms that really draw us in.

The water as a metaphor is about the passage of time. It’s about temporality. But it’s also about emotion, an excess of emotion.

"The first image where I did use water was the flooded hallway which is based on photographs of flooded bunkers under the Reichstag," Casebere says. "The water as a metaphor is about the passage of time. It’s about temporality. But it’s also about emotion, an excess of emotion."

"Whereas the prison images for me were about deprivation and a sense of poverty, the flooded images were about some sense of fullness. Maybe it’s a fear of drowning. It’s also a sense of overflow - good or bad - but movement."
