Playful, 90s-Inspired Murals That Put The Spotlight On Neglected Peoples

Brazilian artist Alex Senna uses simple, black and white imagery to depict the need for unity among his countrymen.

Although the murals have decorative value, Senna hopes to do more than add cool art to blank walls. His playful, 90s-inspired illustrations put the spotlight on the neglected class– the poor, the old, immigrants, and minorities.

Through his art, Senna compels us to consider topics like love, solitude, loneliness, conformity, and family. All exhibited on the street, out in the open for anyone to encounter.

"The charisma of their numerous characters - whether they are young dating couples, elderly gentlemen, placid saints or melancholy boys - establish a romantic dialogue with the observer, as they inspire notions of dream, subjectivity, drama and faith," Julia Bolliger says of Senna's work.

"The languid formats of its protagonists seek balance on calculated doses of tragicomic humor. The exposed fragility of the moments invented by Senna contrasts with the aggressive hardness suggested by urban art. "
