Gritty Photos Of Street Life In 1970s New York

These photos of 1970s New York give gritty insight into the city's urban decay and the people who lived there.

Shot by Camilo José Vergara, these photos represent some of his earlier work. Though born in Chile, it wasn't until he moved to New York City in 1968 that Vergara began to carry a camera around. He shot anything and everything he came across, attempting to capture the very fabric of each neighborhood. And with a degree in sociology, Vergara used his work to provoke change.

Vergara would later go on to become an award-winning photographer, writer, and documentarian. You can find his whole portfolio of work here.
