Artist Hosts A Picnic At The US / Mexico Border And Even The Guards Join In

Remember artist JR's massive scaffolding installation that turned the US/Mexico border wall into a tourist destination? The French artist installed a gigantic portrait of 1-year-old toddler Kikito from Tecate, quietly peeping over the wall from the Mexican side.

As a celebration of the installation's last day, JR invited people on both sides of the border to gather for a potluck picnic. Both sides shared the same food. Both sides had a band. And even the border patrol guards shared tea with attendees.

The picnic today was clearly forbidden, and yet it was not shut down.

Though the wall is a symbol of division, during this playful picnic, it became a sign of unity.

"Together we are stronger," JR wrote of the occasion.

"For the last 10 years, I have been working in conflict zone, jails, borders and I always found an « angel » that helped us make the impossible possible ..." he continues. "The picnic today was clearly forbidden, and yet it was not shut down. It’s always worth trying."

Even baby Kikito was there, his image towering above the picnic-goers as he sat in his mom's lap. Though the two were considered "guests of honor", neither are allowed to cross the US side to get the ideal vantage point of the installation.
