Surreal And Erotic Self-Portraits That Unleash The Unconscious Mind (NSFW)

Brittany Markert reveals the inner-working of her mind in this surreal self-portrait series. Titled In Rooms, the portraits delve into creepy, erotic, and beautiful rooms of the artist's subconscious.

Markert began the series as an abstract diary in 2011 after finding her first film camera. She fell in love with the process and learned to print her portraits in the dark room. For Markert, self-portraiture became a pen for the diary she could never write.

In Rooms aims to channel the unconscious mind as a means to unleash our imagination and liberate our repressed fears and desires.

"Influenced by psychoanalysis, Jungian's shadow work and the surrealist art movement, In Rooms aims to channel the unconscious mind as a means to unleash our imagination and liberate our repressed fears and desires," she says of the series.

These atmospheric scenes are scripted yet improvisational. This is how she documents her hidden fears and desires while also exploring those belonging to others.

"My subjects are myself, and people that I love or admire deeply – people that I get to know over time and study their inner worlds of violence, desire, madness and fear, like my own," she says. "Moments In Rooms feel real, whether lived, observed, dreamed or hallucinated."
