Rare, Behind-The-Scenes Moments With The Virgin America Flight Crew

The Secret Life of Virgins is a series that takes us behind-the-scenes of the daily routines of the Virgin American flight crew.

Shot by Portland-based photographer Molly Choma, the series is a compilation of her ten year working in the skies. Though she was shooting from the start, her work took on a special kind of urgency when she learned that Virgin American was bought out by Alaska Air.

This $4 billion deal meant that, for Choma and the rest of the flight crew, their specific work culture will disappear in 2019.

I just wanted to preserve it, not necessarily for the public, but for my friends and people like me who grew up with Virgin America.

“I just wanted to preserve it, not necessarily for the public, but for my friends and people like me who grew up with Virgin America,” Choma told Travel + Leisure. “Whether that’s people who were there since the start or only for the past six months, I wanted something to immortalize what we have.”

In the series, attendants kill time knitting or preparing food on the snack carts. This is the crews' downtime, moments when the flight is delayed or things are running late.

Her love of the job and her fellow-coworkers shines through in this surprisingly atmospheric series. The lighting is a gentle purple or cool blue, an iconic trademark of the company.
