"Anti-Selfies": Artist Lies Facedown In Tourist Spots And Pretends To Be Dead

STEFDIES is an "anti-selfie" art performance series that has Stephanie Leigh Rose lying facedown in popular tourists destinations.

In the photos, she looks dead. But for Rose, this is the closest she's ever come to getting back to the root of what photos were originally supposed to be– a simple moment captured in time.

"In the current culture of selfie stick-kardashian-youtube-photoshopped-memememe shitshows, we have forgotten what it means to take (or treasure) a photograph," Rose explains. "We live in a virtual reality obsessed culture. Nothing is what it truly is, especially in photographs."

It is the truest sense of what I believe photographs should be- tangible physical proof that “I was here“.

Each photo is spontaneous. There's no added equipment or lighting. And more impressively, there's never a barrier between her face and the ground. This means that Rose has gotten very close with the floors of public toilets and tourist filled streets.

"That is the beauty of this series, each photo is just a blip in a day. Nothing less, nothing more," she says of the spontaneity of her series. "It is the truest sense of what I believe photographs should be- tangible physical proof that “I was here“."
