Artist Damon Belanger paints custom shadows that mischievously refuse to resemble the objects they mirror.

For his latest series, Belanger was commissioned to install 20 fake shadows around the downtown of Redwood City, California. Bike racks sprout flowers, mailbox shadows become monsters, and a monkey seems to be hanging out near the parking meters.

“The shadows give regular mundane objects a lively spirit so people can have a little fun in their everyday life,” Belanger says.

By bringing shadows to life, Balenger hopes to make people more aware of their surroundings. A simple walk down the street can be a treasure hunt when you have something to look for.
