Beneath This Japanese Cemetery Hill Lies A Massive Stone Buddha

This awe-inspiring stone Buddha lies half hidden within a man-made hill in a cemetery in Sapporo, northern Japan.

Architect Tadao Ando was commissioned to build the false-hill around the massive Buddha to create a more contemplative lead-up to the statue, much like a prayer chapel.

Above ground, lavender flowers bloom creating a crown around the Buddha's head. Below, visitors are invited to enter the hill and wander the tunnels.

"The design intention was to create a vivid spatial sequence, beginning with the long approach through the tunnel in order to heighten anticipation of the statue, which is invisible from the outside," writes Tadao.

"When the hall is reached, visitors look up at the Buddha, whose head is encircled by a halo of sky at the end of the tunnel."

Thus, the hill structure both highlights and hides the 44-foot-tall statue. Find more of Tadao's past work here.
