This Mermaid Swimming In 10,000 Plastic Bottles Is A Surreal Visualisation Of A Lifetime's Worth Of Waste

This surreal photo shoot by Benjamin Von Wong has mermaids swimming in 10,000 plastic bottles for a weirdly beautiful reminder to recycle your trash.

Where did the number 10,000 come from? According to Von Won, if the average American uses 167 plastic bottles a year, in 60 years they will have used 10,000 plastic bottles. Thus, this is 60 years worth of plastic trash.

Originally, the concept started with just the mermaid costume. That was the easy part. But sourcing, de-labeling, un-capping, and cleaning 10,000 bottles proved to be a huge project. This took 25 volunteers 2 days of work to complete.

"We were lucky to receive the three perfect colors that we needed," Von Won explains. "Turns out the three most popular Colors of bottles are white, blue and green. All we had to do was think of unique and interesting patterns that would look good with a mermaid on it."

So what was the hardest part of capturing this surreal concept?

"The whirlpool was the toughest shot to design," says Von Won. "We used old plastic wrap to design the swirls, and left black garbage bags to create the black center."
