Halima Aden Is The First Woman To Wear A Hijab On The Cover Of Allure

Halima Aden is making impressive strides in the fashion industry. Just this year, the 19-year-old was signed to IMG, walked in Yeezy Season 5, and is now going on record as the first woman to model a hijab on the cover of Allure.

In her interview for their American Beauty issue, Aden talks about what the headscarf has come to mean for her. Born in a refugee camp in Kenya, she moved to the US with her mom at age seven.

By age eight, wearing a hijab was a way to look a little more like her hero, her mother. And as she grew older, the accessory became a personal interpretation of her Muslim faith as well as an empowering symbol of body-positivity.

“Society puts so much pressure on girls to look a certain way,” she says. “I have much more to offer than my physical appearance, and a hijab protects me against ‘You’re too skinny,’ ‘You’re too thick,’ ‘Look at her hips,’ ‘Look at her thigh gap.’ I don’t have to worry about that.”

Of course, not all Muslim choose to wear a hijab.

“It’s how I interpret my religion,” Aden explains, “but there are women who are Muslim who choose not to wear the hijab. That’s something people often forget.”

But for those who do opt for the traditional piece, the world of Western fashion has been slowly catching up. We've seen examples from Dolce & Gabbana and H&M, as well as Nike's new lightweight "Pro Hijab".
