Man And Nature Mix In This Surreal Raindrop Sculpture In Kiev

Nazar Bilyk is a Ukrainian artist who built this six-foot-tall bronze and glass sculpture in Kiev. Known as "Rain", the piece is a surreal tribute to man's relationship with nature.

Bilyk's bronze man stands in the center of Kiev Fashion Park, staring into the sky. A giant raindrop has settled on his face, allowing him to view the world from a whole new perspective.

“The raindrop is a symbol of the dialogue which connects a man with a whole diversity of life forms," says Bilyk. "The figure has a loose and porous structure and relates to dry land, which absorbs water."

In this work I play with scale, making a raindrop large enough to compare a man with an insect

This piece treats man as an "other" in the natural world. Bilyk's figure is caught in contemplation as he become aware of just how small he is in relation to the larger world.

"In this work I play with scale, making a raindrop large enough to compare a man with an insect, considering that man is a part of nature. Moreover, this work concerns the question of interaction and difficulties in coexistence of man with environment," Bilyk continues.

“Almost each sculpture is autobiographical. Senses and questions which fascinate me became fundamental in the creation of ‘Rain.' In almost all cases, the sculpture provokes the viewer to look up in anticipation of the same raindrop.”
