A Neon Fairytale Of Late-Night Rambles Through The Streets Of NYC

When Daniel Soares moved to New York, his sleep habits took a critical hit. With shimmering, neon fairy tales just outside his door, there was no way this filmmaker could allow himself to turn in early.

Neon Nights is a collection of nightscapes shot from the perspective of an outsider. As a Portuguese guy who grew up in Germany, Soares was totally unfamiliar with daily life in New York City, meaning every visual composition is captured through fresh eyes.

The series is a scrapbook of nighttime rambles and speculations about other stranger's lives. It's a commentary on city life and loneliness.

Perhaps even more accurately, it's a series of tallies, each photo a mark representing another night of lost sleep.

But who can blame him? Those smoky atmospheric neon scenes are just as fascinating as they are addictive.
