This Guy Has Been Building His Own Cathedral For 53 Years

Everything changed when Don Justo contracted tuberculosis. He quit monastery life and prayed fervently to be healed of the contagious disease. If restored to health, he vowed to build a cathedral.

That was back in 1961. Today, at 91-years-old, Don Justo is still fulfilling his vow.

The cathedral is a work of love. Most materials were salvaged or up-recycled, creating a cozy, mismatched aesthetic. Inside, rays of light filter in through the half-finished vaulted ceilings and towers. And as you walk to the very center, a dome inspired by St. Peter's Cathedral rises over 130 feet into the air.

Don Justo was never trained as an architect and he doesn't have a building team, so everything feels handmade and natural. He's been slowly adding to the cathedral for 56 years now, waking up every morning at before the sunrise.

The cathedral won't be finished in Don Justo's lifetime. But he's not worried. The sprawling series of spires and chapels will be taken care of by the same forces that have preserved it so far.

You can find out more about the project here.
