He Documents His Tinder Matches With Dreamy Bedroom Portraits

George Downing lets us in on his romantic life with a mesmerizing series called Host. Comprised of a year's worth of Tinder matches, the series indulges our voyeuristic tendencies with beautifully lit bedrooms shots.

Downing considers the series to be a natural progression of the millennial dating culture. Sure, apps like Tinder were originally meant for hook-ups exclusively. But since it's advent 5 years ago, the app has come to be used for so much more.

"It's gone from something that was seen as quite superficial to something that is completely normal among the people I know," Downing says of the app.

Still, to go from getting a coffee to photographing them in their bedrooms is a pretty big jump!

Hosting isn't just a series of bedroom portraits. It's also an in-depth look at what the humans behind Tinder profiles actually look like.

"With most of them I organized to get a coffee first," the photographer says of the communication with his subjects. "Mainly because I felt like I could better explain the concept in person, but also because I was asking to come to their houses and take semi-nude or completely nude photos of them, so I thought some initial contact was important. Still, to go from getting a coffee to photographing them in their bedrooms is a pretty big jump!"

According to Downing, his portrait series was surprisingly well received. Most of his matches were very open to being a part of the series.

"It only emphasizes the point that these apps can be used for whatever you want —" Downing says, "there are so many interesting people and Tinder makes it so much easier to meet them. They allow us to connect in a completely different way."
