Utterly Elaborate Sand Sculptures From The Beaches Of Japan

Toshihiko Hosaka creates some of the most elaborate sand sculptures in all Japan. His work is so detailed and refined, most sculptures look like they've been carved from stone.

Hosaka has been sculpting with sand for almost 20 years now, and not without notice. His work recently won the Fulong International Sand Sculpture competition. The winning piece was a statue of Musashi Miyamoto, a Japanese swordsman from the16th century who was famous for his undefeated record in 60 duels.

No molds or adhesives were used to build these sand sculptures. Each one is made from pure sand, piled up and then shaped into its final form.

Hosaka then finishes his sculptures with a special hardening spray which allows the sculpture to last a little longer in the wind and sun.

You can find more of Hosaka's incredible work through his website here.
