Giant Hands Rise From The Canals Of Venice To Support The City

Lorenzo Quinn installed giant hands in Venice as a reminder to protect historic sites from climate change. And with rising tides threatening the structure of the magical city, climate change is a very real topic for Venetians.

'Support' was created specifically for the 2017 Venice Biennale. The giant, human hands reach out from the canal waters to steady the walls of a historic building. Thanks to the location and size, the piece is easily spotted by both boat and foot traffic. And at night, the great hands are illuminated for an epic view.

"I hope my art brings a new focus of attention to a global calamity that we are faced with," writes Quinn.

"This sculpture' success is because it speaks to the people in a clear, simple and direct way through the innocent hands of a child and it evokes a powerful message which is that united we can make a stand to curb the climate change that affects us all. We must all collectively think of how we can protect our planet and by doing that we can protect our national heritage sites."
