Blood-Chilling Paintings From A Murdered Polish Painter

The paintings of Zdzisław Beksiński are a twisted glimpse into a nightmarish world of demons and spirits.

Beksiński's expressive work is often described as "utopian realism". He weaves themes of doomsday judgment, deformed ghosts, and surreal skeletons with tender moments like love or loneliness. His work is wholly human, yet wholly alien.

Beksiński first began exhibiting his work in 1964 in Warsaw. He continued to paint dark, moody scenes of expressionst decay until the 1980s when he transitioned to surrealist architectural subjects. He continued to work as an artist until 2005 when he was stabbed to death in Warsaw by an acquaintance.
