Afghan photojournalist Zalmai has been following the refugee trail in Europe and capturing the stories of the people he meets.

Once a refugee himself, Zalmai has a first-hand knowledge of the migration process. It was 15 years ago when he was also forced to flee his home, back when the Soviet army occupied Afghanistan.

"I was 15 years old, traveling with my older brother - without our parents - crossing Afghanistan, Pakistan, India. Eventually, we made it to Switzerland." he says.

"This time of my life was the most difficult. Suddenly you have to leave your country, your family, your friends, your school, without knowing why."

Now, a different people group is being forced to uproot themselves and make the journey to safety. Zalmai is dedicated to telling these stories.

“When I tell them I was a refugee myself, suddenly the barriers fall and the hearts open. They trust me, and I feel a huge responsibility to make their voices heard,” he says.
