She Lived Homeless For 30 Years And Made Beautiful Art

Lee Godie spent 30 years surviving on the streets of Chicago. And not only did she survive, she somehow also found time to make art.

Living between 1908-1994, Godie would live rough and made art either drawing on park benches or in photo booths. This courageous woman kept her portfolio with her at all times and made a little extra cash by sometimes selling her work to passerby.

People began to take notice of Godie's story when it was featured in a newspaper in 1988. And the story led to Godie's daughter reaching out to her mom. The two were reunited and her daughter could be found spending time on park benches and even sleeping out with her mom at different points.

Because Godie was a highly private person, we don't exactly know why she insisted on living on the streets for so many years or what else she was involved in during her life. All we truly know is the clues she left here and there. And of course, her art speaks for itself.
