Stunning Photos Of Hong Kong In The 1950s Taken By A Teenager

These exceptional photographs are the work of Ho Fan who arrived from Shanghai in 1949. At the time he was just a teenager, armed with a heavy duty Rolleiflex camera and all-consuming desire to discover as much as he could about this strange new city he now called home.

What's sets his incredible photographs apart is not just his tender age. What is particularly remarkable about his images, is they showcase an eye for composition and lighting far exceeding his years.

Instead of shooting the city's cliched landmarks or restricting his work to a confined and cramped studio, Fan decided to document the fascinating (and at times chaotic) scenes from the streets of 1950's Hong Kong itself.

Strangers going about their business, hidden communities and the hustle and bustle of daily life were all captured and fused into his camera roll.

66 Years later, his work provides a candid and beautiful account of one of China's emerging cities, including the individuals that contributed to its development and evolution during that era.

The entire series is available in his stylish book 'A Hong Kong Memoir' available here.
