19 New & Hilarious Animal Names That Make Way More Sense

Have you ever wondered where animals' names come from and who actually decided on the names themselves?

The answer is a little more complicated than you might imagine. Firstly there's the scientific name of the animal or plant to consider. Take 'Oryctolagus cuniculus', not only is it hard to pronounce, it's also the name for a common rabbit. The reason for such an unusual name is to help scientists provide a partial taxonomic map of the evolutionary relationships between species.

Away from the complex and fascinating world of science and biology, the secondary (and most common) name is often rooted in Latin and Greek or was original created by the local indigenous population.

Hippopotamus translates to "horse of the river" in Latin. Whilst in ancient Greek "hippo" represented a "horse" whilst "potamus" referred to a "river". Kangaroo- From the Australian Aboriginal Guugu Yimithirr language, originally "gangurru". Captain Cook's expedition in 1770 recorded the name as "kanguru" and today we spell it "kangaroo".

The name 'Kangaroo' dates back to the Australian Aboriginal Guugu Yimithirr language, where the leaping mammal was originally known as "gangurru". But when Captain Cook visited in 1770, he recorded the name as "kanguru". Over the proceeding years its spelling has morphed into the universally known"kangaroo".

So as you can see there're several factors that go into naming an animal or plant. That being said, rather than using complex Latin phrases we'd totally be down for permanently calling the 'Capra aegagrus hircus' (aka Bearded Goat) the 'Wizard Cow' - its just way more fun.
