Hauntingly Beautiful Photos Of Childhood In Soviet Lithuania

This collection of photos by Antanas Sutkus document the everyday of people living Soviet Lithuania. Rather than focus on the model citizen as promoted by Soviet propaganda, Sutkas made the unconventional decision to capture the lives of ordinary folks.

Titled People of Lithuania, Sutka's portraits reveal his love of people, especially children. His work often focuses on the younger generation and he makes it a point to lower himself physically to their level in order to capture the world as seen from their perspective.

"Childhood is the most important platform for me as a photographer," he says. "Children are genuine, natural. They do not live according to 'our' laws."

This collection features images from the 1960s and 1970s. Though these photos were taken during a period of poverty and a strained relationship with Soviet rule, the portraits are tender and beautiful.
