Japanese Men Now In "Committed Relationships" With Children's Toys
If we told you that there were countless Japanese men who consider themselves to be in a "genuine, loving and committed" relationship with a children's toy - you might think the world has gone mad.
Maybe it has, because that's exactly what is happen in the Land of the Rising Sun right now. Statistics highlight an alarming trend that 1/3 of Japanese men under the age of 30 have never even dated a woman. The Japanese media have dubbed this social phenomenon as "Sekkusu Shinai Shokogun" which essentially translates into "celibacy syndrome"
And this is where Hatsune Miku (a fictional character created for a sound synthesiser program) has stepped in to fill the void. As one fan puts it "Once you fall in love with nijigen girl, that's nirvana. You can never escape that world."
Amusingly enough, her "voice" is that of voice actress, Saki Fujita who is in fact "real". Not that that matters to Hastune Miku's male fans, who are certainly a dedicated and passionate bunch. Some individuals spend around 80-90% of their income her merchandise featuring her likeness. If you can dream of it, be it posters, pillowcases, comics, vinyl figurines, bike wheels or life-sized dolls you can bet that there's a Hatsune Miku version of it.
But whilst declaring to the world you're in a passionate relationship with a fictional character sounds harmless enough, far dark ramifications are taking place. As more single men spend time with their nijigen girlfriend and less time in the company of real women, Japan's birthrate is in freefall. In 2012 they set a new record for the least amount of newborn children in the history of the nation, simply because men are shunning conventional relationships.
So what can be done to address the decline? The single men of Japan would be wise to close their comic books, switch off their TVs, shutdown their computers and head to the local bar. They might not find Hatsune Miku sitting there ready to buy them a drink, but they might just start a new relationship with the women of Japan themselves.
