Overloaded Vietnamese Motorbikes That Defy Logic

Forget speeding bullet trains or SUV's, when it comes to Vietnam the majority of the public whizz around on motorbikes. It's the cheapest mode of transport to run and ideally suited to the often bustling, narrow and busy streets. But one of the major drawbacks to owning a bike (in any form) is it suffers from a severe lack of space to carry your shopping, goods or even passangers.

That's not an issue for the Vietnamese people, who have somehow mastered the art of burdening their bikes with the most ridiculous loads whilst still being able to get from A to B totally unscathed.

Photographer Hans Kemp has captured some of the best examples of locals transporting their produce, stock and even animals in a manner that appear to defy even physics. Quite how the bikes are able to remain balanced and mobile remains a mystery. You might want to spare a thought for those pigs on the back mind you....

His revealing book, the 'Bikes of Burden' contains 148 drivers stacking as many items as they can on their bikes, shot against a background of city streets, the quiet countryside and every road and curb in between.

Vietnam then, a place where few road rules exist and home to some of the world's most gifted balancing artists.
