Randomly flick across any cable TV network and within a few seconds you’ll land on a infomercial. Those product sales pitches disguised as TV shows, complete with nauseating hosts who extol the virtues of whatever item they want you to buy.
Actors are given white lab coats to look like healthcare professionals, whilst musclebound men (who don’t use the gear they’re advertising) pretend to work out and get ripped. Throw in the obligatory “Just 5 easy payments of $19.95 but that’s not all! We’ll even include a booklet you didn’t want!” tagline, serve and repeat.
Before marketers became savvy in the art of persuasion via colour TV, they had to rely on press and print ads to sell their inventions. The more outlandish the claim, the more people would be compelled to read the ad. Better yet, the more controversial the images used, the more likely customers we’re willing to part with their hard earned cash.
Would you like some cocaine toothache drops for 15c? Maybe a bicycle the whole family can use whilst your aunt sews simultaneously? Or how about a watch that discreetly tells your lady that it’s “Time to f**k”? Well you’ve come to the right place!
