Distressing Images Of Women Punished For Dangerous Liaisons

The Liberation of Paris (also known as the Battle for Paris) was the moment when the entire nation breathed a welcomed sigh of relief as the occupying Germany soldiers finally surrendered.

But not every member of French society celebrated, for some the end of the occupation simply marked the start of an era of brutal persecution. Hundreds if not thousands of young women were publicly shamed and punished for allegedly having affairs with German soldiers. Sleeping with the enemy, resulted in public beatings and included having your head shaved - a tactic designed to humiliate and embarrass.

It's incredibly unlikely that the majority of these unfortunate women, had in fact held relationships with German officers - but in an era where patriotism was rife, hearsay and idle gossip provided a powerful adversary against the concept of logic and compassion.
