2012 has not only been a solid year for new music, there’s also been some fantastic music videos released too. And whilst MTV seem intent on playing everything apart from music clips these days, it’s a music video PSY – Gangnam Style which is the most watched video in the history of YouTube / Vevo.
We’ve trawled across the far reaches of the interwebs to bring you the top 10 music videos of 2012 that really caught our eye. We’ve deliberately tried to unearth some bands you might not have heard about, just to add a few surprises into the mix.
Now they might not be the best songs of the year, but as pieces of creative work we reckon these 10 clips stand head and shoulders above the rest. Kooky, heartfelt, genuine, funny, random and above all memorable – you’ll find something in each to enjoy. We’ve haven’t listed them in any particular order, we’ll leave it up to you to decide your favs.
So sit back, turn up the volume, grab a beer and get ready to be entertained & if you think we’ve missed any let us know in the comments below.
Enjoy.
1. JACK WHITE – I’M SHAKIN’
Why?: Well, what’s better than one Jack White? How about two?
2. FLYING LOTUS – TINY TORTURES
Why?: If you’re Elijah Wood, is there anything cooler than having random objects fly around your bedroom & turning you into an epic cyborg? Probably not.
3. LANA DEL RAY – Ride
Why?: Clocking in at 10 mins & beautifully shot, it almost feels like mini indie film at times. Lana’s introspective narrative adds a personal touch as the clip unfolds. Classy.
4. SKRILLEX – Bangarang
Why?: A badass clip where a group of disaffected youths hijack an ice-cream truck using dynamite & high voltage charges – before taking their criminal activities to the next level…
5. BigBang – Fantastic Baby
Why?: Whilst this video makes very little sense, it’s visually arresting. Take a combination of owls, riots, movlotov cocktails, gas masks & more bling that you can shake a stick at and you know you’re in for a few surprises. They even sing “Boom Shakalaka” & it somehow works. Shaggy would be proud.
6. M.I.A. – Bad Girls
Why?: You don’t often associate the barren deserts of the Middle East with drag racing, extreme stunts & synchronized dances moves, but this clip from M.I.A. has all that and more.
7. The War On Drugs – Brothers
Why?: Virtually flawless in its execution, here’s a clip the Coen Brothers would be proud of. Uplifting song to boot & more than a little Bob Dylan-esque.
8. Passalacqua – Sirens
Why?: Opening with the phrase “Through the woman came the beginning of sin and through her we all die.” should give you some idea as to what to expect – sexual undertones galore. It’s without question, the most unusual video on this list. A surreal nightmarish world (not dissimilar to Pan’s Labyrinth at times) the likes of which Lady Gaga could only dream of. Just don’t blame us if you can’t sleep afterwards.
9. Hot Chip – Don’t Deny Your Heart
Why?: Now it might look like a kitsch version of FIFA / Pro Evo – but keep watching, because this is no ordinary game of football…
10. PSY – Gangnam Style (강남스타일)
Why?: Could it really be anyone else? The biggest music video, not just of 2012 – but of all time. Not hard to see why either.
