Seo Young Deok has taken the art of sculpture to a whole new realm. For literally hundreds of years sculptures around the world have been carved and created from stone, wood & marble – but the South Korean artist is using a vastly more unconventional material – bicycle chains.
We’re not just talking a few chains from your childhood bike either, we’re talking hundreds of meters of metal chains all fused, bolted and welded together to form some of the most breath-taking forms of the human body.
His remarkable series “Dystopia” is littered with highlights of his incredible work, but one which stands out head and shoulders (quite literally!) from the rest is a work called ‘Nirvana’ it’s a 7ft head, cost an eye-watering $40,000 to build. Whilst each sculpture takes Deok countless months to create, design & assemble, the end results serve as truly timeless pieces of art.
