Popular Culture Gets Whitewashed & Blanked Out

Alex Wain May 8, 2012 0

We need more people in the world like Andrew Miller, who help us all collectively cut through the noise and bring us back to reality a little more often. He’s the visual artist who strips away all the colours & pre-determined emotions, noisy branding, marketing tricks & spin tactics that get thrust upon us all through the medium of advertising.

He’s the creator behind the ‘Brand Spirit’ project, where he paints recognizable (and in some cases iconic objects) white and reduces them to their natural and most basic state. The technique itself brings a sense of calm to all the images – the question is, do you still find them equally as appealing and do the brands associated with them still influence your opinion of them?

Here’s what he has to say about the concept:

Every day for 100 days, I will paint one branded object white, removing all visual branding, reducing the object to its purest form. I can purchase each object for less than $10, it can be something I own, something another person gives me, or something I find. Brand Spirit has been featured on Swiss MissPSFKGizmodoAdweekThe Next WebTrendland, and Huffington Post.
